THE CONFERENCE DOCTOR

Looking for a special and unique way to help nonprofit organizations at your next conference? You should consider having The Conference Doctor. After serving in the nonprofit management trenches for 25 years as the founder and Executive Director of The Support Center (now Compasspoint Nonprofit Services) and The Management Center (both in San Francisco), I decided to reinvent myself as The Nonprofit Doctor and The Conference Doctor.

The Nonprofit Doctor is me, Bob Orser, as an independent management consultant, specializing in Executive Director coaching, human resources and fundraising. The Nonprofit Doctor is also The Conference Doctor, complete with white lab coat and stethoscope. At more than 50 nonprofit organization conferences in 14 states over the past thirteen years, I have provided conference attendees with confidential, one-on-one counseling to address their management, fundraising and career concerns and questions.

As The Conference Doctor, I can help you:

  • Offer a new and different service to your nonprofit conference attendees, an attractive alternative to large-group plenaries and workshops
  • Provide attendees with individualized, concrete solutions and ideas that they can start implementing on their next business day
  • Add a little color and humor to your next conference; when some people first see me in my doctor's garb, they look like they think I may be crazy or something. I don't mind at all, particularly if it makes them feel a little better about their own mental health!

I love providing this service at conferences because not only does it give the participants a chance to talk with me individually about issues that they don't feel comfortable bringing up in a larger group, but it allows me to "take the pulse" of the nonprofit community.

And my doctoring doesn't necessarily end when the conference is over. I tell all my "patients" they can call me anytime with additional questions. They do and I love following up with them and finding out what happened when they went back to "reality." The topics that my "patients" raise include: career issues; problems with Board Members; difficult staff members; and lack of funding. On a positive note, many of my sessions include brainstorming and coming up with wild, creative ideas to move the nonprofit community into the future.

Once hired, I will send you a complete packet of information that includes how to publicize The Conference Doctor, how to set up appointments in advance, sample appointment cards, photographs and other suggestions. I charge on a sliding scale for each full day of doctoring, plus travel-related expenses, including air travel, ground transportation and lodging. I don't charge for the time it takes to travel. I can sometimes arrange piggyback airfare if I am traveling to other communities on the same trip. If your budget is tight, we can probably work something out.

Charge: $600/day plus travel-related expenses.
